Foto Forum Santa Fe presents a photography exhibition by Aydinaneth Ortiz.

“In 2013, my life was forever changed when I lost my youngest brother, Geovany Ortiz, at the hands of my brother, Israel Ortiz, who suffers from schizophrenia. This tragic event shifted the focus of my art practice, and in an attempt to cope, I created an artist book titled La Condición de la Familia comprised of family photographs and my personal photo archive. The book, initially created to express my grief, has since allowed me to share my experience and connect with others who have also dealt with loss. Our grief was short-lived while we dealt with Israel’s rapidly declining mental health and substance abuse.” Aydinaneth Ortiz
Aydinaneth Ortiz, BA in Art (University of California, Los Angeles), MFA in Photography (California Institute of the Arts, 2018) utilizes documentary, landscape, and portrait photography, to focus on intersections between urban structures, familial relationships, mental illness, drug addiction, and immigration. Her art is a direct response to personal struggles and familial hardships. Most would shy away from making the private so public, but through the art-making process, Ortiz channels her negative energy into a shared conversation. Her artwork has been exhibited widely, most notably at the Pomona College Museum of Art, and the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, where her art is now part of the permanent collection.
In Ingredients, a series of photographs of eight everyday products used to make methamphetamine, Ortiz removes the objects from their original environment, and juxtaposes against a black backdrop. Alongside this work, she installed a re-creation of her brother’s bedroom simulating one of his violently destructive episodes. Walking into the space, you are inundated by wall tagging and drawings of phrases like, “only God can judge me” and “go to sleep.” In the center of the space, there is a bare mattress with worn sheets, broken light bulbs, cigarettes butt, and drug paraphernalia.Through California State Mental Hospitals, a series of photographs of state-run mental institutions and the neighborhoods in which they coexist, Ortiz learned the lack of mental health support for her brother was not an isolated incident but part of a broader systemic issue.
Hija de tu Madre, Ortiz’s newest photographic series, focuses on the positive relationships between migrant mothers and their daughters with black-and-white individual portraits of her mother, sister, and I, along with 13 other mothers and daughters. Each portrait aims to counter negative migrant stereotypes by photographing strong women who have migrated to the United States. While the White House continues to marginalize Latin Americans, this series aspires to empower women’s resiliency despite the multitude of challenges they continue to face.
